In 2005 Judith Nelson, co-founder of the ADAA with her late husband David Nelson, and Tamara Taylor, ADAA Vice President and long-time Akbash Dog breeder, made a trip to Turkey to revisit the village where Akbash Dogs were first identified, to visit cultural sites in that area, and to travel with researchers who were involved in identifying and documenting Akbash Dogs in remote yaylas (mountain valleys).
2007 Premier in Kalamazoo, MI
2007 is the first year when Akbash Dogs participated in the Premier shows held by UKC in Kalamazoo, MI. This is despite the fact that the breed was recognized by UKC in 1997 and invited for exhibition purposes only in 1998, when 4 Akbash Dogs were part of an ADAA exhibition to introduce the newly recognized breed, sharing space with the then sister organization, the Kangal Dog Club of America, which also had a Kangal Dog there to represent the other native Turkish "shepherd's" breed.
In 2007 Ch. Patteran Tanis owned and exhibited by Patrick Beaver represented the Akbash Dog breed in both the Top Ten competition and the three other shows that make up the Premier. Tanis, going Best of Breed, was at the head of the line in each group competition for all four shows. He turned heads and was a great ambassador for the breed, both in and outside of the ring.
The 4 day show offered a chance not only for Akbash Dogs to be exhibited in a very high profile and widely advertised show but also for ADAA members to meet and visit.
